I don’t doubt that President Trump would try to rush a vaccine or conduct some kind of military operation in a last ditch attempt to bolster his support.

More likely to be effective, though, are Trump’s attempts to undermine democracy. While I don’t believe he would follow through and significantly contest the election, partly because his campaign is not organised enough to fight the election in the courts, his rhetoric will deter some Democratic voters who react by giving up and saying “what’s the point of voting if he’s going to steal the election?” That’s why it’s so important that commentators and Democratic political figures don’t take Trump’s rhetoric too seriously, and instead reassure voters and urge them to get out a vote early.
